Using stories for reflection, learning and evaluation

The statistics and data we collect provide us with part of a picture and are focussed on what we’re able to measure. But to fully understand what people need from health and social care services we need to listen to the people that are affected. This can come from qualitative research, engagement and consultation exercises. It can also help make sure that the measures we count are those that mean most to people.

Sharing people’s stories and experiences

Storytelling framework for social care in Wales

Storytelling is the way that people make sense of the world and connect with one another.  The Social Care Wales storytelling framework includes a guide to using stories for well-being, learning and publicity.

Co-production network for Wales

Co-production is way of creating public services where people providing and people receiving services can share power and responsibility, and work together in equal, reciprocal and caring relationships. It’s based on the strengths already in communities. It creates opportunities for people to access support when they need it, and to contribute to social change.

Relational evaluation methods

Ripple Effects Mapping

Ripple Effects Mapping helps to create a visual story of actions, and the ripple effects on people, services and organisations.

Access online training about this participatory, qualitative method that can capture the wider (intended and unintended) impacts of a project or programme. Course provided by National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR): Applied Research Collaboration West.

Developing Evidence Enriched Practice (DEEP)

DEEP is a co-production approach to developing social care and health policy and practice. We use story and dialogue methods to help us gather, explore and use different types of evidence. The DEEP handbook gives information about Most Significant Change (MSC), a storytelling and learning method for evaluation for projects or programmes that are focused on change, designed for use in services.

Human Learning Systems

A model for managing public services based on the idea that what works in complex systems is to keep experimenting and learning, with individuals, in teams, in organisations and as a whole system.

Engagement database

Searchable directory of engagement activity in the North Wales. The aim is that organisations in North Wales can see what people have already told us about health and social care so that we can build on those conversations rather than repeat them.

Story collection ethics guidelines and templates

Resources for projects in North Wales funded by the Regional Integration Fund to help them collect stories and case studies.
