Finding, understanding, and presenting data

Where to find data

StatsWales
Welsh Government’s online store of detailed statistical data for Wales. It covers nearly 1,000 datasets, including key information on Wales’s population, economy, central and local government performance and spending, as well as health, housing, the environment, education, and transport.  

National social care data portal for Wales
The portal includes data on topics linked to the need for care and support, including health conditions like dementia, data on deprivation and data about the population. It also includes modelling to provide projections for future needs.

Public Health Wales Observatory
The Public Health Wales Observatory provides data analysis, evidence finding and knowledge management to support decision makers and the public with health information.

Data Cymru
DataCymru maintain a range of dashboards and data portals to support Welsh public services, including Well-being of Wales, InfoBaseCymru, and WCVA’s voluntary sector data hub.

Office for National Statistics (ONS)
ONS are responsible for collecting and publishing statistics related to the economy, population and society at national, regional and local levels across the UK. They are the UK’s largest independent producer of official statistics and its recognised national statistical institute.

Census of population
Data and analysis for the 2021 Census. The census takes place every 10 years. It gives us a picture of all the people and households in England and Wales. This is part of the main ONS site.

Stat-Xplore
Database of Department of Works and Pensions benefits data down to small area level (LSOA).

NOMIS
The National Online Manpower Information Service (NOMIS) concentrates on labour force data but also contains other population data, including census data back to 1961.

DataMapWales
DataMapWales provides geographic information and associated services. Geographic information includes everything that can be shown on a map, for example doctor’s surgeries, flood zones, noise pollution, and areas of deprivation.

Crumbs! Understanding data
A short guide to understanding and valuing data, from defining the different types of data to dealing with bad data and bias. Written by the Defence Science and Technology Laboratory (Dstl).

Understanding your information: an introduction to summary statistics (Data Cymru)
Beginners level. Download the guidance booklet or sign-up for a free online course which will introduce you to tools and resources to help you summarise data and provide easy to understand statistics. Other Data Cymru courses include ‘understanding and using performance data’.

More or Less – BBC Radio 4
Radio programme and podcast that explains – and sometimes debunks – the numbers and statistics used in political debate, the news and everyday life. Includes links to other useful webpages.

Presenting data

Presenting Data (Data Cymru)
Beginners level. Download the guidance booklet or sign-up for a free online course which will introduce you to some top tips, tools and resources to help you present data effectively in tables, charts, maps and text.

Data visualisation e-learning
Intermediate level+. A modular online course for anyone who has to create data visualisations. Produced by the UK Civil Service.

A bite-sized guide to visualising data
A guide to some different ways of visualising data and their respective strengths and weaknesses. Written by the Defence Science and Technology Laboratory (Dstl).

Office for National Statistics – data visualisation
Guidance for creating charts and tables and best practice for using colour in your work.

Government Analysis Function guidance
Guidance and support for improving the communication and accessibility of data, statistics, and analysis across government. Produced by the UK Civil Service.

Office for National Statistics – content style guide
Learn about the UK’s national statistical institute house style, tone of voice and spelling and grammar conventions.
