North Wales Together: Helping people with learning disabilities find employment

04/11/2025

Across North Wales, more people with learning disabilities are finding paid work thanks to the North Wales Together Regional Supported Employment Service.

Available in Anglesey, Gwynedd, Conwy, Denbighshire, Flintshire and Wrexham, the service provides tailored one-to-one support to individuals who want to work but may face additional barriers, working closely with families and carers to ensure everyone involved feels supported.

Each person is matched with a trained job coach who supports with writing CVs, interview preparation, and on-the-job support. The support continues for as long as is needed.

Kim Killow, Lead Planning and Development Officer, North Wales Together Regional Team said:

“This service is about more than just finding a job, it’s about providing people with learning disabilities the opportunity to consider paid work as a real option, often for the first time in their lives, and receive the individualised support they need to build confidence, develop skills, and take steps towards greater independence.”

Colin, aged 62, had been seeking paid employment for over 40 years. With help from the service, he secured a role as a delivery assistant and is now thriving.

“My job makes me feel better, it feels good”, “Go for it” is Colin’s message to others.

Paddy Taylor, Manager at Grange Residential Care Ltd. said:

“Having a paid job has been a goal of Colin’s for many years. I believe it has given him a new sense of purpose and boosted his self-esteem.”

Employers benefit from recruitment support, job matching, and practical advice on reasonable adjustments. Families and carers receive guidance on benefits and ongoing support.

The service forms part of the North Wales Learning Disability Strategy, which brings together councils and services to improve opportunities and outcomes for people with learning disabilities.
