Age & Dementia Friendly Holywell: Connection, Care and Community

18/11/2025

Age & Dementia Friendly Holywell is a local community group dedicated to providing help, support, and activities that bring people together in Holywell and the surrounding areas.

The group is based around three key venues – Holywell Golf Club, St Peter’s Church, and Holywell Football Club. Meetings are held three times a month on Fridays, alongside a programme of regular events and trips that help foster friendship, companionship, and support.

Who We Support

Originally beginning as a Dementia Memory Café, the group has since grown to become inclusive and welcoming to all. People come not only from Holywell but from across Flintshire, finding connection and kindness within the group.

The focus is on supporting older adults, people living with dementia, and their families and carers. The team understands that every journey is unique, and their aim is to provide guidance, connection, and care for everyone.

Recognised for Our Work

The group’s impact has been recognised both locally and regionally. In January 2025, North Wales Police and Crime Commissioner Andy Dunbobbin visited and praised the group for its commitment:

“Dementia is a condition that affects many people across North Wales, both those living with it and those caring for a loved one who has dementia, and these numbers are only going to grow over the coming years. That’s how I know how important groups like this in Flintshire are, and why I have been so pleased to come along to learn about its work and why I am delighted we have been able to support it with funding.”

Holywell Town Council and Flintshire County Council have also recognised the group’s valuable role in bringing people together and supporting families.

Voices from the Community

What makes Age & Dementia Friendly Holywell so special is the warmth, understanding, and sense of belonging it offers. Many families have shared how much the group has meant to them:

“We welcome everyone who is feeling isolated or lonely. Anyone who is struggling and needs help and support is also signposted in the right direction.”

Sue Wynne, Group Leader

“My amazing dad was part of this absolutely essential group, with their knowledge and understanding they made both his and my mum’s final years together so much better. I now volunteer whenever I can, so others benefit as we did. Sue and her team work so hard which gives people a much better life.”

Andrew Benyon

“I love the support of the group and the help Sue, Helen, Jo gave as regards who to turn to for getting the care we now have in place for mum.”

Pauline Adams

“Tony got companionship, a day to look forward to, new friends and support. Since Tony’s passing, I have support knowing Sue is at the end of the phone also all the other Friday friends we have met. Holywell age & dementia is a valuable lifeline. A reason to get up on a Friday for. A laugh, togetherness, support. Thank you.  Thank you Sue I could go on. The trips Helen is great, entertainment is brilliant. But togetherness and friends are just brilliant.”
